What is this Keto Thing?
What is Keto?
That was the question I asked a friend of mine a few months ago, and that exact question led me on a search to find out more about Keto, which has changed my life. Not only was my friend following a ketogenic lifestyle, so were a few other people in my life, but they did not come out and say, I’m eating a lot of fat, a few carbs and I’m losing weight. But, seeing the transformation of people right in front of my eyes made me want to know more.
As a nurse and a researcher of everything (lol-I love learning), I needed to know what keto was all about. So here begins my ketogenic journey… or as I call it… Living Ketogenically.
Let me start by sharing with you what is Keto and why I chose this lifestyle. The Ketogenic diet is a high fat, moderate protein, low carbohydrate diet (Moore & Westman, 2014). It is also called a Keto and LCHF (low carb high fat) diet. I promise to go into more detail about keto later ♥.
My main reason, I confessed openly, was to lose weight, but I found out keto had other therapeutic benefits for many chronic diseases including obesity, diabetes, depression, mental illness and more. I am a 52-year-old full-time RV’r wife and mom who has lived more than 30 years working as a nurse. Fifteen of those years were in school (Wow)!
I’ve spent many years encouraging and lifting up other people, sometimes at the darkest moments in their lives, but inside of me was a girl who was suffering, hurting, and doing her best to put up the facade of happiness…and I wanted to do something about it. This journey started with my weight, but the journey is becoming more about me… PhD., Natural, Me.
Why choose a Ketogenic Lifestyle?
I chose a Ketogenic lifestyle because I was sick and tired of being sick and tired. With age come changes in our health, but some of them we bring on by our lifestyles. My eating lifestyle… whatever was near me when I was hungry, I ate it. I was always hungry. Every diet I have ever been on, I was hungry. So, when I heard “you eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re satisfied…” I was all for it.
I have been yoyoing up and down (more up than down) with my weight for so many years and even had gastric bypass surgery that was successful for about four years. Then, the weight slowly crept back on along with the feelings of depression and failure. I will talk more about that in later in my blog.
I am so glad I asked was curious because I am 35 pounds lighter and I the old Zelda is beginning to emerge. Living Ketogenically is changing my life. It does not heal all wounds, but it does make a difference. Follow along with me on my journey, which will focus on life, health, education and living Ketogenically (Keto). My goal is to inspire, encourage, and educate everyone, including me. The ketogenic lifestyle is not for everyone, but for those who are seeking to learn more about how to live Ketogenically, stay tuned… There is more to come!
